Small business in Indonesia

IndonesiaÂ’s labor force is expected to expand and urbanized rapidly between 1995 and 2025. Much of the urban workforce continues to be engaged in small-scale economic activity. This book examines why small-scale enterprises have performed so well (or poorly). It also considers what future contribution small-scale enterprises could make. The analysis of the data derived from JakartaÂ’s small-scale garment and wood furniture enterprises highlighted the familyÂ’s dual function: it served as both a social structure and an institutional organization. This dual function was crucial to the flexibility and success of small-scale enterprises. The book is divided into three parts:
- Part One provides a framework for examining enterprises in Jakarta
- Part two considers specific historical, locational, and industrial influences on the garment and wood furniture industries and their influence on the organizational structures of different sized enterprises.
- Analyses the performance of Jakarta’s small-scale garment and wood furniture enterprises.
