The Handbook of emotional intelligence

When Daniel Goleman's bestselling book Emotional Intelligence was first published in 1995, most readers were not aware that the area of emotional and social competence has been the subject of scientific study and empirical research for many years. To accurately perceive, understand, and express our feelings, to control our emotions so they work for us and not against us, has long been known to be essential for, effective communication, social adeptness, adaptability, self-actualization, and personal happiness.

Until the publication of The Handbook of Emotional Intelligence, there has been no definitive or comprehensive text on the subject of emotional intelligence. Reuven Bar-On, the person who coined the term "EQ" and developed the first test of emotional intelligence (the EQ-I), assembled with James D.A. Parker a brilliant group of researchers, academics, and practitioners for this basic and eminently useful publication. Interdisciplinary and multimethod in nature, this handbook for professionals, businesspeople, educators, clinicians, and students brings together various schools of thought and ways of approaching such different aspects of the wider area of emotional intelligence as alexithymia, personal intelligence, practical intelligence, and closely related disciplines. It emphasizes the importance of empirical methodology, developmental studies, behavioral observations, and psychometrics in order to describe and conceptualize this construct and the key components that can increase human effectiveness and wellness.

In addition to the theoretical material, this handbook provides practical applications, specifically in the field of education (for designing programs to educate children to be more emotionally and socially intelligent and to reduce negative behavior) and in the workplace (for applying this approach in recruiting, hiring, training, and promoting employees and managers to improve organizational effectiveness).
