Managing the digital library

This collection of Tennant's Digital Libraries columns from Library Journal is stimulating reading. The columns, originally dated from November 1997 to October 2003, have been edited and rewritten, with new content added. For example, his rant against the MARC record as an arcane and outdated demon, "MARC Must Die," is softened in a following essay, "MARC Exit Strategies," in which Tennant concedes MARC has a few good qualities that should be retained-if some additional features are added, perhaps by embedding the record in an XML wrapper. In the same vein, Tennant in "Library Catalogs: The Wrong Solution" castigates the online catalog for not being a one-stop shop for information, while a later column, "Not Your Mother's Union Catalog," outlines the efforts of OCLC's Worldcat and Research Library Group's Eureka to provide the kind of information he envisions. As with any collection of this type, no topic is dealt with in depth, but these essays offer an excellent overview of the wide-ranging world of digital libraries.
