General Douglas MacArthur, one of the most controversial public figures of our time, is the subject of this superb biographical drama. The film traces his career from 1942, when the Generall, his position in the Philippines made hopeless by Japan's destruction of more than half the planes in his Far East Command, leaves Corregidor pledging "I shall return,", through his vicorties in the Pacific, his deft handling of the democratization of Japan during the post war occupation, his Presidential ambitions, and return to war in Korea where his insubordination led to his dismissal by Truman in 1951.
