Penyusunan sistem pengembangan produk baru di PT Y





Statement of the problem:
PT Yummy Food
Utama is a manufacturing company
which produces dairy products
i.e. soft cheeses, yoghurt and pasteurized  milk. Based on the Management Practice Evaluation Program (EPM)
which was undertook
to see how PT Yummy implement
the "Ten Operations  Management  Strategy  Decisions",  it was  found  out
that  PT Yummy has relied on quality  as  its winning
 order strategy. Nevertheless  its new product development system
that has been relied upon all these times does not seem to have standard quality in its process.
Indeed, to date PT Yummy has been using the new product development system and managed to develop about 21
product variants. Nonetheless, facing the tight business competition with new products
war nowadays as well as fast changing demand
of the market, the performance of PT Yummy lately
in developing new product, that is one new product
after three years,  was considered
as less aggressive that it may lost many opportunities to gain better market share.








Method used:
The
method used for this final paper is Stage-Gate New product approach
of Robert G. Cooper.  It
 is
a  conceptual  and  operational model
 for moving  a  new 
product project  from  idea to  launch,  so that  the  effectiveness  and  efficiency
 of the  new product process can be improved.


Summary
of Findings, Conclusions, and Recommendations:

 


Even though PT Yummy has its
own new product development system,
the system has not been documented. Besides
,  it  is difficult
for the company to obtain focus sharpening from one stage of screening process
to the next stage because
all stages of the screening process
was performed by Focus
Group Development which does not have standard
tasks in each stage. Furthermore the system has not been seen
to have the core team to be the gatekeeper and be responsible for
the project from beginning  to  end 
as well  as  it does  not
use cross functional
 approach.
 From the process point of view, the prevailing
new product team performing the process
sequentially instead of parallel and flexible. One last fact which is most important is that the current product
development  system has not been based upon strong market orientation
;  it is obtained from the 'management  meeting


Based on the mentioned facts,
it is recommended that the company  improve its  new  product  development   system  by  using  The   Stage-Gate 
 New product approach. In that
way, the company will be
able to assure the product quality
consistently in line with its winning order strategy.
