Challenges in Implementing Engineering Technology Education in Malaysia



As Malaysia races against ttime to achievve Vision 20200 to be a deveeloped nation, there is an urrgent need forr highly-skiilled human reesources to fullfill the requireements of the industry. Thiss calls for an exxpansion of thhe engineeringg technologgy program too increase thee number of ttechnical gradduates. Howeever, various cchallenges are faced by thee institutionns in the impleementation of the Engineeriing Technologgy programs, wwhich have siggnificant negattive impact onn the nationn in general aand, in particuular the graduuates from thee programs. DData was colleected from a brainstormingg session beetween six orgganizations invvolved in proviiding engineerring technologyy education inn Malaysia and the Universitii Teknologgi Malaysia (UTTM) and a connvention on EEngineering Teechnology Futture in Malaysiia. This paper describes andd discusses the challengess faced in the eefforts to expaand engineerinng technology programs in MMalaysia, and pproposes wayss to overcoome them.
