Ethic Chinese as Southeast Asians



The title of the book based a workshop that held on the theme of “Ethnic Chinese as Southeast Asians” to discuss the perception of the Southeast Asian Chinese in term of their position in the respective Southeast Asian Countries, their relationship with China, their self–identity, as well as the perception of “indigenous” Southeast Asian towards the ethnic Chinese in their countries. Thus, this volume aims to be major regional study incorporating a variety of regional perspectives on common themes relating to the question of the Chinese identity, also explores the position of the ethnic Chinese in contemporary as well as the future Southeast Asia for providing us, as the reader with a most up-to-date and comprehensive study of the subject. This volume consists of eight chapters. Each chapter is accompanied by a brief commentary by a discussant. The Appendix is based on the workshop discussion on the role of women in shaping ethnic Chinese identity. It is not a full-length paper but is include inside the book with the hope that other may pursue this understudied topic. It should be noted that the title of the workshop was “Ethnic Chinese as Southeast Asians”. Southeast Asian here refers to people in the individual Southeast Asian states, and not a collective regional identity.
