Service sector in Asia Pacific economies



In many countries, the service sector is an essential component contributing to their GNP and hence productivity improvement in this sector will have a substantial impact on the national economy. Despite the massive investment in automation and the introduction of information technology, the productivity of service sector such as transport, retail, hotel, and hospital has not increased compared with that of manufacturing sector. A low level of productivity can be observed across Asian countries whether they are developed or developing. It is crucial for them to improve the productivity of service sector for sustaining a high economic growth. This book is a compilation of papers contributed by participants and experts who took part in the five-day Workshop on Productivity in Service Sector in Singapore in September 1995. This book will help member counties understand the emerging issues and problems associated with the service sector in member countries.
