This publication is the outcome of an APO Top Forum on Labor-Management Cooperation held in Tokyo, Japan from 11 to 15 November 1996. The forum is the sixth in a series which emphasized, among othersÂ’ participation. It was primarily designed to focus on how workersÂ’ participation can promote closer labor-management relations in the decision-making processes on firms. The active involvement of workers and unions in these processes that have a direct bearing on their interests can create climate of confidence and goodwill between the two parties. It will lessen the sense of insecurity and degree of mistrust among workers which can be caused by arbitrary decisions taken by management. At the same time workersÂ’ participation will eliminate or reduce labor conflict and disputes which would adversely affect productivity. This book is a compilation of papers contributed by leading experts who represent management, unions, and academe. This book will be of interest and benefit to corporate executives and union leaders who may find practical value in workersÂ’ participation as a prerequisite for higher productivity and better quality of work life.
